Simple Make-up tips for the eyes of the home.

Window box with pink flowers

It is said that the eyes are the windows to the soul.   Windows are the eyes of the home.  They let the light in providing a framed view of the world outside.  We dress them by adding shudders, shades, curtains or drapes to add style while providing privacy.

The eyes have it.

One very basic thing you can do bring out the eyes of your home is to clean them so they sparkle.

  • Don't use newspaper for cleaning windows.  Newspaper is not very absorbent and leaves traces of the cleaner on the window. Also, once the cleaner gets on the paper the inks will begin to run and may actually make the windows appear dirtier.

  • Use a squeegee to dry the windows and they will stay clean longer than those cleaned with paper towels. Scrubbing with a paper towel creates a static charge on the window, which attracts dust. Other materials to consider are cloth diapers or tight-knit towels, both of which do not leave behind lint. The towels can be found at most mechanics shops.  Wash the windows in the morning. Heat can cause the windows to streak because the washing solution dries too quickly.  If you must clean later in the day, do it on the sides that are shaded.

  • Use an alcohol-based rain shield on the outside of freshly cleaned windows to keep them from spotting. Rain shield can be purchased at an automotive store. Apply according to package directions and buff off.

  • Quickly clean a few indoor windows with a cloth that has been soaked in white vinegar.

  • The simplest solution is two teaspoons of liquid dish soap mixed with five gallons of lukewarm water.

Window boxNow for a little color.

Window boxes filled with an array of colorful flowers will enhance the view from the inside as well as the outside.  There are many varieties of planter boxes to choose from.

The easiest way to have year round, lasting color is to place the plants in the window box while still in their containers.  This also makes the window box lighter and allows air circulation.  If you want to change your plants all you do is replace the pot with a new one.  Plant an herb garden outside your kitchen window.

Effie Yeaw Nature Center, Virginia the owl, and upcoming nature walks with guide

We visited Effie Yeaw Nature Center on Sunday.

It's a perfect place to pack a picnic lunch and bring a cooler, go for a walk along the trails then come back find a nice piece of grassy area under the trees and lay a blanket out and have a nice lunch and relax.

Inside the nature center they have an owl named Virginia that they rescued.  She is beautiful.  She looks like a big ole cat.  We watched her take a nap and then when she woke up she stretched out her legs and preened her feathers.  Her big eyes and the way her feathers on her head move, she looked so cuddly and like I just wanted to hug her.  Not that the experience would be like a cat.  LOL!  Not with her big claw feet.  haha.  But it was a really nice visit and walk.   It's air conditioned and nice to go inside the museum and look at the exhibits and the staff are experts on nature and the wildlife so just talking to them is educational.  One of the young fellows we met there started out volunteering as a youth and then finally got hired to work there.

Next time I'm going to remember to bring some bug repellent.  The mequitos were not bad but they were out.  If you go remember to use DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon of Eucalyptus to keep the miquitos away.

Just about every Sunday at 1:30 they have some kind of tour with a guide and it's free.  So I have posted some links and information below about upcoming tours.  I plan on going more often.   It's Monday and I'm still feeling the great effects of being there.  It brightens the spirit.  <g>

Here are the next two events and below is the pdf calendar of upcoming nature walks that occur on Sundays at 1:30 pm.

Sssnakes!

Could you tell a harmless snake from a poisonous one?   Learn to identify the different snakes found along the American River Parkway and why they are an important part of our ecosystem.

Saturday the 26th at 1:30PM

Natural History Hike

Enjoy the majesty of 200-year old oak trees and the fragrant, colorful wildflowers so attractive to pollinators. Take a guided walk and discover the interconnection between the plants and animals in this oak woodland.

Sunday the 27th at 1:30PM

  • Weekend Nature Programs and Activities (Occur year-round)
The Nature Center offers programs for all ages every Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Weekend program calendars are posted 1-2 months in advance and no reservations are necessary except on a few rare occasions, and this is noted on the calendar. Here is the latest Calendar of Events.
  • Fun Days Children's Day Camp - (Occur Annually during Spring, Winter and Summer school breaks)
Entertaining and educational activities will awaken your child's curiosity about the natural world. During the summer months, and spring and winter breaks, day camp activities focus on natural and cultural awareness and environmental education. Children participate in hikes, craft projects, field trips, nature games, and other fun (and educational) activities. Pre-registration is required, and there is a small fee (ARNHA members may register early). Please call 489-4918 for more information. Download a Day Camp Brochure.
